Virginia Woolf and the Languages of Patriarchy
An Indiana University Press collection of feminist essays on Virginia Woolf, arguing that her novels and criticism constitute a sustained attack on patriarchal language. Jane Marcus is forceful, sometimes contentious, and always deeply read. The book has the modest presentation typical of Indiana's academic list: plain cover, dense type, endnotes instead of footnotes. It makes no concession to the casual reader. Indiana published it in the plain format that feminist scholarship often received in the 1980s. Ideal reader: the Woolf reader who wants political reading rather than aesthetic appreciation, or the scholar looking for an argument to test against the text.
