Spring Awakening: A Play
Frank Wedekind's 1906 play about adolescence, desire, and institutional failure, here in Jonathan Franzen's translation. The action follows three teenagers through suicide, abortion, homosexuality, and adult hypocrisy, with no redemption waiting at the end. Wedekind refuses the comfort of moral instruction; he is more interested in showing how silence and shame make ordinary cruelty possible. Franzen's English catches the play's strange mixture of tragedy and comic brutality, the tone that made the original notorious. Ideal reader: the reader who thinks young people have always understood more than the curriculum admits, or the parent who can stand a play without a lesson plan.
